What is MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is an advanced imaging technique that is painless and does not require x-ray radiation. MRI utilizes magnetic fields, radio waves and computers to create extremely detailed pictures or “images” of your internal organs and structures. The MRI unit, or scanner, consists of a large magnet, antenna and a computer. During your exam, the hydrogen atoms in your body receive radio signals from the MRI unit. These signals, which are totally harmless, are returned by your body and processed by the computer. These images are then printed onto film, or sent digitally, for interpretation by our radiologists to help your physician plan the treatment for your injury or illness.
Open or High-field MRI?
Not all patients can be accommodated by traditional MRI systems. However, our Open MRI does have an extra large opening, which comfortably provides room to image patients weighing over 500 pounds.
Open MRI features a specialized design that is different from the traditional, or tunnel-type, high-field MRI scanners. The extra large opening allows exceptional airflow and a wider range of view around you during your scan. This design feature will make you feel much less enclosed and confined, virtually eliminating anxiety or claustrophobic tendencies. The open design also allows a family member or friend to accompany you throughout your examination.
High-field MRI however has several advantages over the Open MRI, and may be preferred by you and your physician. Our high-field MRI has a significantly stronger magnetic field, highly sophisticated processing software and a variety of specialty imaging transmitting coils giving it unique ability to provide clearer, more detailed images in shorter scan times. For some examinations, the image quality, or resolution, of the high-field scanner is the option preferred by your physician.
If you are nervous or anxious about your examination, or would prefer the comfort of a little more space, our Open MRI is perfect for you. However, if you would prefer a shortened exam time, or if your physician has specifically requested the most advanced imaging capabilities available, the High-field MRI is the scanner of choice. Either way, Champlain Valley Open MRI is the only facility with both scanners available for our patients. Come in and see which one works best for you and your physician.
